There are always plenty of disease-causing bacteria, viruses, fungi and other organisms lurking, either in a fish’s body or in the environment, waiting for an opportunity to attack a susceptible fish. They are a part of life that cannot be avoided, however fish do have a system for coping with them – armies of immune cells that recognise these invaders, attack them and hopefully, destroy them before they destroy the fish. If a fish’s immune system is overstressed, inefficient or undernourished, it cannot sustain an army able to recognise the enemy and destroy it – which is when they develop disease. The AQUANUTRO food range is manufactured by the process of extrusion that results in a sterile cooked product and in greater food digestibility - carbohydrates are better digested when cooked. This unique manufacturing process fuses proteins, vitamins, minerals and flavours into a totally homogeneous product. The process neutralises nutritional inhibitors and destroys anti-nutritional factors in the raw materials, while improving palatability and removing unwanted odours from raw materials. Furthermore, extruded diets are less dense than pressed and flaked diets and can be processed in floating or slow sinking forms. The pellet holds its shape in water over extended periods and is therefore more likely to be eaten by shy fish. Floating and slow-sinking food are preferred when it is essential to view feeding at the surface. Floating and slow-sinking foods have the advantage that it gives the fish greater opportunity to feed, which means less feed wastage and reduced water pollution.
